We are a little behind on reviewing this one. We think it was announced in August 2019 but our Trader Joe’s is 90 miles away, so we don’t make it there very often. We finally picked this up out of their amazing selection of hummus (we love the Cilantro and Jalapeno one best.) Yes, we do also eat healthy at our house most of the time, sweets are a treat!

It might seem just odd to make a chocolate hummus or it might seem like an absolute abomination to you, depending on your hummus-feelings. We definitely thought it was odd, but we love hummus and we love chocolate, so why not meld them into a plastic tub and see what happens! The mix actually makes a lot of sense given how many people are looking for less sugary snack alternatives for their kids and themselves. So, there is definitely shelf space for a product like this…if it is good!

The taste is definitely dark chocolate. The flavor is almost like the Hershey’s dark chocolate cocoa powder you bake with. It is a good flavor less bitey than real dark chocolate, less sweet than milk chocolate. The texture is hummus all the way, but it’s clearly labeled hummus, so that makes sense. There’s no chickpea flavor, you only get the texture and that’s not a bad thing. If the idea was a nice alternative to sugary candy and snacks than this is a healthier alternative. According to the container and the Trader Joe’s website it has 50 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, & 5 grams of sugar per 2-Tbsp. serving, that is really good for a snack, especially if it is used as a fruit dip.

We tried this on salty crackers, animal crackers, and fruit. It was smooth and creamy and nice and chocolatey and worked well on all of them. If you are looking for a healthier alternative, you can’t go wrong with this one. At US $1.99 it is definitely worth getting.
